ATV navigating a rocky mountain path in Trás-os-Montes

High in the granite hills of Trás-os-Montes, where mountain roads narrow to dirt tracks and the nearest town is 18 kilometres away, five farming families shared a single path to their irrigation canal — a path no standard vehicle could navigate. That changed when a donated all-terrain vehicle arrived.

A Village Forgotten by Infrastructure

The hamlet of Carvalhal do Estaú, home to 23 residents, sits at 820 metres above sea level. Its terrain — sloped, rocky, and seasonally muddy — made it inaccessible to conventional vans or pickups. Farmers relied on donkeys or their own feet to carry tools, seeds, and irrigation equipment to their plots.

When the rainy season flooded access paths in winter 2023, residents were cut off from their irrigation systems for six weeks. The resulting crop losses pushed three families below subsistence level.

The ATV That Changed Everything

Agricola identified Carvalhal do Estaú through its regional liaison network and matched an available all-terrain quad bike — donated by a Braga adventure sports company — to the village cooperative. The vehicle, fitted with agricultural attachments, can now carry up to 250 kg of supplies along paths too steep and narrow for any other motorised vehicle.

"In thirty years, I have never seen anyone pay attention to this village. When the ATV arrived, the children came out to watch. We all cried." — José Cardoso, Village Elder, Carvalhal do Estaú

Irrigating a Future

Since the ATV's arrival, residents have repaired all three irrigation channels that had been inaccessible for years. Two families have replanted abandoned terraces with vines and vegetables. A local cooperative has formed to manage the vehicle and plan future planting seasons collectively.

Agricola is now exploring whether a second ATV can be placed in a nearby village facing similar terrain challenges. If you own off-road vehicles, ATVs, or quad bikes that are no longer needed, please consider donating through our vehicle donation programme.
